Making the Most of Daylight Savings

Today, we all skipped our clocks ahead one hour—sprang forward, if you will—thereby losing one precious hour of sleep to daylight saving time. But with the loss of Zs comes one glorious bonus—an extra hour of sunlight to brighten the last of winter’s dark days. Here, two Birchboxers sound off on how they plan to use that extra time in the sun.

Get Back to Grilling

While I normally save my charcoal for weekend barbecues, a little evening sunlight is a great incentive to fire up the grill. In truth, grilling is an easy, healthy way to cook almost anything—from peaches and strawberries to a head of Romaine lettuce. With a little bit of prep work, you can even throw on a lobster.

Join a Sports Team

Now that I’m leaving the office to sunny skies, it’s time that I ramped up my exercise routine—and added some fun to boot. With the intramural sports season just getting started, I’ll have no shortage of choices, whether I opt for a classic (blacktop basketball) or a wildcard (is boozy tag a thing?).

Embrace Rooftop Happy Hours

Of course, if I’m taking my workout to the great outdoors, it only makes sense to do the same with my leisure. Warm weather means the return of the rooftop bar, and quite frankly, I can’t imagine a better way to end the day than with a sunset, some friends, and a Dark & Stormy. If you’re running the rooftop circuit in NYC, here are 25 spots to consider.

Take a Half-Day Trip

I’m a big believer in the therapeutic qualities of a weekday half-day, and with daylight lingering past 8p.m., the possibilities are staggering. When the time is right (and my workload allows), I plan to jet out for a long, long lunch break: Afternoon hikes, museum marathons, and a Chinatown food tour are all top contenders.

Reboot My Commute

Given that I’ve spent the past four months making a beeline from work to my bed, I’m going to take advantage of the prolonged daylight by changing up commute: Instead of rushing to the subway station on the same block as Birchbox HQ, I’ll take a 15 minute stroll to a further hub, gaining a much-needed dose of vitamin D.

Burger Break

In the winter months, I’m quick to avoid any situation that requires an outdoor line. With an extra hour of light between dinnertime and the sunset, however, I’m going to brave the notorious queue at Shake Shack for a burger and fries. Well worth the wait!

Fun Run

Sometimes I forget that sunlight equals ENERGY, and that energy can be used to—drumroll please—exercise. With that in mind I’ll trade my time on the treadmill for an outdoor jog along the waterfront of my Brooklyn neighborhood.

Mind the Rays

Not to be a killjoy, but if there’s one thing to remember while spending extra time in the sun, it’s to reapply your sunscreen before leaving the office. I’m turning to Supergoop!’s City Serum in SPF 30 to make sure that my face gets the protection it needs.
