Last season of The Mindy Project hinged on the classic “will they or won’t they?” scenario. Now that Mindy and Danny are together, how are you planning to keep viewers hooked?
I think the great thing about Danny and Mindy is how different they are. These are two people who would have conflict deciding whether to take the escalator or the stairs (Danny would take the stairs; Mindy probably hasn’t walked up a staircase in ten years). Also, their pasts come back to haunt them in the next season. It’s been more fun writing them now than when they weren’t together.
You’ve become a role model for young women (and us here at Birchbox!) What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
I have two great pieces of advice. One is from Greg Daniels, my mentor from The Office. His advice was “Be kind.” It’s deceptively simple advice and can be really challenging to remember, but I find when I actively choose to be kind, it is so rewarding. The other advice my mother gave me, which is, “Always be your own best friend.” That has been one of the most life-changing pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten.
Who’s your biggest celeb crush (and have you ever met him or her)?
Michael Fassbender, whom I have met twice in passing. I hope he never remembers me and then one day, when I get in great shape and get my teeth fixed, I’ll run into him at a Whole Foods and hit on him like a panther.
Fill in the blanks:
My favorite pizza topping is: Pepperoni, of course.
My favorite motivational song in the writers’ room is: For some reason our writers’ room is frequently inspired by “Let It Go” from Frozen.
Finally, you get to work with some awesome hair and makeup artists. What's the best beauty tip or trick you’ve picked up?
I learned that the skin around my eyes is much thinner than the rest of my face and ages 30 percent faster. So I started using eye cream every night, which is probably the easiest and fastest beauty regimen addition ever.
We’ll be hosting—wait for it—a live Twitter chat with Mindy on August 22! By joining and asking questions, you’ll be entered for a chance to win one of 50 autographed copies of the book. Stay tuned to our Twitter feed for more details.
