5 Minute Makeovers for Hair, Skin, and Face

Perhaps you overslept (or hit the snooze one too many times) or maybe your last meeting of the day just ran over—either way, you’re running late and in need of a beauty fix that looks like it took much longer than it did. We tapped our favorite experts in hair, skin, and makeup for a handful of ways to transform your look—all in five minutes or less.

Hair

Instead of wearing your hair down or in a ponytail, try a chic topknot. Not only does it look polished and chic, but L’Oreal Professionnel Master Session Artist Joseph DiMaggio has a genius trick for ensuring pretty waves later. Add a bit of mousse to damp hair, then braid it before twisting into a topknot. After a few hours, DiMaggio says, “let down the braid to get that beautiful lived in beachy waved look.” Use your fingers to tousle the waves. Got flyaways? DiMaggio tackles frizz with a little lightweight oil or smoothing serum. If you don’t have any oils on hand, a brush spritzed with hair spray will do the trick.

Skin

Don’t save the spa rituals for Sunday night. You can give yourself a facial in the time it takes to brew a cup of coffee. After at hot shower, which helps opens your pores, apply a fast-acting clay or gel mask. Aesthetician Elena Rubin suggests looking for a formula rich in beta-carotene, like her soon-to-launch Monarch Mask, which will give skin a natural glow. We’re also fans of AHAVA’s Purifying Mud Mask, with kaolin white clay and soothing jojoba oil.

After rinsing off the mask, apply your usual serum or moisturizer. To brighten the eye area, Annet King, Director of Global Education for Dermalogica, suggests a de-puffing eye gel with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, green tea, and ivy extract. “Use your ring fingers and circle inwards towards the nose, then tap with fingertips over the eye area to speed up circulation and drain excess fluid and de-oxygenated blood.” Or, use Rubin’s DIY trick: place damp, chilled green tea bags on the eye area for a few minutes. The caffeine that will perk up the skin and reduce puffiness.

Makeup

New York-based makeup artist Neil Scibelli says you can give yourself a mini makeover with just three products: “Picking three features to pop is a great way to enhance your look in under five minutes.” First, apply a quick flush of color on the cheeks, then apply your favorite highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes and finally add a bold makeup color (Neil loves a deep brick red, like Jouer’s Hydrating Lipstick in Sarah) to tie it all together.
