Much like David Bowie, I’m all about ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. With this principle in mind—and Bowie’s awesome tune stuck in my head—I hit up Next Artist hairstylist Cameron Rains to make some serious hair moves. Inspired by Kate Mara’s cropped and texturized ‘do, I opted for a sleek, shoulder-grazing lob. (FYI, that’s just a combination of the words ‘long’ and ‘bob.’)
On styling best practices, Rains said, “It’s not about being perfect—the messier the better.” For no-fuss waves he recommends misting salt spray onto wet hair to create body. Next, blow dry and spritz strands with dry shampoo for added grit, volume, and texture.
Post-chop, I felt fiercer than Beyoncé bringing down the house at a sold out show. And not to get all meta, but I felt as if a weight had literally and symbolically been lifted off my shoulders. Perhaps 2014 will be the year—dare I say it—I finally come into my own. Cue Mrs. Carter’s fabulous "Grown Woman": “I know who I am, ‘bout time I show it.”
