No, There Isn’t an App for That

Let’s be real—sitting side-by-side on your iPhones doesn’t count as “quality time.” Have you forgotten how to have old-fashioned (read: non-digital) fun? This month, try unplugging and having some retro-style recreation with your friends and fam. Here are five nostalgic past times we’re bringing back this December.

Game Night

If you think board games are for the fogeys, you are sorely mistaken, my friend. A walk down the games aisle at Target will tell you what we don’t have to—there are so.many.choices. From strategy games like Settlers of Catan, to classics like Scrabble, to absurd treasures like Apples to Apples, you’ll be surprised how quickly these games trump anything from the App Store. Careful, however—board games tend bring out the competitive streak in even the quietest wallflowers.

Clothing Swap

When you’ve mix-and-matched your closet nine times to Sunday, there’s nothing more refreshing than someone else’s wardrobe. Enter: A classic clothing swap. The price of admission? A bag of tradable goodies. Have your friends set up “shop” in different corners of your house and let the bartering begin. Since it’s cheaper than the mall and requires less digging than the thrift store, you’re sure to walk away with a few steals.

Polish Party

Remember sleepovers? The slumber parties of my youth were filled with makeovers, movies, and gossip. But just because middle school days are long gone doesn’t mean you can’t revisit a night in with the girls. Just grab your bffs and favorite nail colors—dare: go glittery—and queue up a few episodes of your latest Netflix obsession. (A couple suggestions: Scandal or House of Cards.)

Book Club

Even if you’ve traded in your hardcovers for an e-reader, there’s nothing like discussing your most recent read with a group of your pals IRL. Set a date, make some snacks, and get to gabbing. Whether you loved it or hated it, a healthy book debate will leave you with a deeper sense of the story, characters, and themes.

When in Doubt, Make Cookies

Until iPhones start producing baked goods out of thin air, a productive day of baking takes the proverbial cake. Whip up a batch of crowdpleasing sugar cookies and invite your pals over to decorate them. Think sprinkles, frosting, and seasonal shapes. Pair the finished creations with some steaming hot cocoa.
