On Duty vs. Off Duty

In today’s round-the-clock work environment, “off duty” may sound like a quaint term. But when it comes to beauty regimens, even the most successful women draw a line between work and play. Here, three startup world rock stars give us their go-to looks for kicking butt in the workplace—and their power moves off the clock.

Alexa Hirschfeld, Co-Founder of Paperless Post

Alexa Sign you mean business: A delicate sheer blouse in a solid color and J Brand Maria pants in black, white, or brown. If I want to look a bit more put together, I will blowdry my hair. I owe much to all of the Moroccanoil® hair products.

Work-from-home power suit: A Japanese silk robe with white blossoms on it.

Weekend look: Unless it’s [a] superfancy [event], I like to keep it natural. I wear Crème Cheek Color in Oleander from Laura Mercier, Intensifying Long Wear Mascara from Bobbi Brown, and Orange Blossom Cologne by Jo Malone.

Off-duty beauty specialties: My red lipstick from Guerlain in Garcon 25. I don’t tend to wear eyeliner at work, but off-duty, I really like stila’s stay all day waterproof liquid eye liner in Dark Brown.

Word to the wise: Beauty is only important insofar as it allows you to feel and act like yourself. Whatever makes you feel that way, go with it.

Melanie Stevenson, Director of Operations at Pencils of Promise

Melanie Power outfit: Fitted black pants with my Jeffrey Campbell studded black booties and my mom's black leather motorcycle jacket.

Power makeup: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick for my cheeks, L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara, a spritz of Daisy by Marc Jacobs, and a touch of eyeliner.

Work-from-home power suit: A pair of paint-splattered sweatpants from my first nonprofit job in art therapy, my super-soft Pencils of Promise t-shirt, and my Warby Parker “Finn" frames.

Never leaves home without: Mario Badescu facial cleansing products.

Second-wind snack: Skittles. I always have them on my desk. I also use them to lure my coworkers over to visit me.

Best way to unwind on weekends: I try to take a Soul Cycle class one day and go for a long run on the other. Bonus: I always do my best thinking on a long run!

Amanda Steinberg, Founder and CEO of DailyWorth

Amanda On-duty uniform: One of my many J. McLaughlin Catalina Cloth dresses—I love how easy they are to wash and pack. My forever battle is my hair. I always carry Giovanni Leave-In Conditioning & Styling Elixir and a travel-size Sebastian Shaper hair spray (aka glue) to tame the frizz.

Power makeup: Estée Lauder Fresh Air foundation, L’Oréal Paris Visible Lift Color Lift Blush for my cheeks, L'Oreal Colour Riche Le Gloss in Nude Illusion, stila forever your curl mascara and Essie nail polish in Ballet Slippers. For perfume, I like Pacifica French Lilac.

Off-duty beauty specialties: Really bright orange or blue nail polish. During the week I stay neutral.

Best Saturday morning ever: A hotel stay last summer with my boyfriend. We woke up, ordered Bloody Marys to the hot tub on the roof, and watched the sea lions.

Never leaves home without: Laura Mercier Secret Concealer on my undereye area. I inherited "black eyes" from my ancestors.

Second-wind snack: Half an avocado—eaten with a spoon.
