Pillar of Good Grooming: Michelangelo’s David

Michelangelo’s sculpting technique was based on incredible attention to detail and an overall sense of balance and unity in the finished product. Why was his "David" such a departure from traditional sculptures depicting this underdog? Well, unlike Donatello's and Verrochio's Davids, who were shown having already slayed Goliath, Michelangelo's David actually shows him getting ready for battle. He was basically having a little last-minute mirror time, preening and pumping himself up for the moment of truth. While we can't all be 17 feet tall and cut from stone, we can draw on Michelangelo’s method—and David's slingshot-over-the-shoulder confidence—in our own grooming routine. Here we offer four steps to a more statuesque appearance.

1. Rock-Solid Minerals

While you are, of course, flesh and bone (as opposed to marble obtained from in the Fantiscritti quarries in Miseglia), you can still nourish your skin with the best Italian minerals. BORGHESE's Fango Delicato, a mud mask sourced from the hills of Tuscany, offers a quick infusion of aloe vera, oat protein, mango butter, and chamomile.

2. A Chiseled Complexion

Michelangelo's artistic process was one of removal, not addition. He sculpted from a marble slab, carefully chipping away until David's form revealed itself. A proper skincare routine is a process of removal too. Slough off dead skin by exfoliating your face every few days and it won't be long before your complexion has that same classical antiquity quality to it. EVOLUTIONMAN Wash & Buff removes dead skin with microbeads—think of them like thousands of little mini chisels.

3. Old Testament Locks

For those blessed with curly locks like David's, finding a lightweight styler with enough tack can be a challenge. Most products with hold and staying power weigh about as much as a head full of marble hair. Oribe Crème for Style dries to a flexible, non-sticky hold. It works equally well on straight and wavy hair, but is particularly good, as we've found, at defining curls.

4. Abs Cut from Stone

If you want an abdominal section that's ready to take on a Philistine giant, the most important thing you can do is watch what you eat. Limit carbs, and increase your intake of lean meat and vegetables. Second: Do a whole lot of crunches. Third: Try some toning ab cream. Sounds like a longshot, but then again, so was David's victory. Lab Series offers an Ab Sculpting Gel composed of caffeine, creatine, and protein to tighten and smooth your mid-section.
