Step 1: Sedu Revolution Flat Iron
To get a swishy pony like the models in Joanna Mastroianni’s Spring 2012 show, start by straightening your hair with a flat iron until it’s sleek and shiny. We like Sedu’s version because it has tourmaline and ceramic plates that heat up super quickly and smooth hair without any snagging. Start by splitting hair into one or two inch sections. Run the iron down sections of hair from root to tip in an even motion.
Part hair to the side and pull forward a two-inch section of hair on the opposite side. Take a few drops of a lightweight, shine serum like Kérastase’s Cristalliste Lumiere Liquide between your palms and run through the lengths of your hair. With some serum leftover on your palms, pull the majority of your hair back (leaving the front section free) and secure into a high pony. Take another two drops of Lumiere Liquide between your palms and smooth the front section to the side, tucking behind your ear. Use a bobby pin to secure hair behind your ear. If your hair is long, you can also sweep back and up into ponytail.
Step 3: Twistband Skinny Headband
Slip a skinny headband over your head a few inches from the front. Twistband’s flexible elastic ones won’t dent your hair or give you an uncomfortable headache—plus they come in a rainbow of shades. Black works well for night, but we’re partial to brights during the day.
