Road To Shine

The matte hair trend? It’s fine for runway but in real life we want gloss, gloss, and more gloss. Hair stylists have an entire arsenal of products at their disposal (plus years of experience) — who better to ask for advice on getting megawatt shine? Our go-to guru, stylist Jeff Chastain, was only happy to oblige. His first tip: skip everyday shampooing, which strips away hair’s natural and beneficial oils. Read on for four other ways to get on your way to shinier hair.

The Post-Shampoo Glaze

Once a week, try using a glaze like Oscar Blandi Salon Glaze, which coats the hair follicle to make it immediately shinier and smoother. Right after you shampoo and condition, wring out excess water and comb the product into hair from the roots down. Leave it in for two minutes, and then rinse and style as usual. You can also add a small amount of glaze to your regular conditioner for a daily boost. For curly or wavy hair, Chastain recommends Wella Professionals Enrich Bouncy Foam, which gives hair a nice dry shine and minimizes frizz. Apply it to your hair when wet, pick through to get rid of tangles, wring your hair out (don’t towel dry) and let the air take care of the rest.

Tools Matter

When styling your hair with heat, use a metal brush. Metal brushes will take on the heat and act like a curling iron or flat iron, adding more shine than your regular brush. Look for a copper one, like this one from SPI, which will heat up evenly and not burn your hair. When you’re not styling, or if you’re brushing before bed (which you should do every night!), use a boar bristle brush like Fekkai’s Classic Brush to add shine. Brushing moves oils from your scalp to the ends of your hair and smoothes out the hair’s cuticles.

Invest In A Multipurpose Serum

Keep hair hydrated and healthy with a multi-use product like Oscar Blandi’s Olio di Jasmine Hair Serum. This great-smelling serum can be used on damp or dry hair before styling, or on dry hair at any point throughout the day. Concentrate on working the serum into the tips of hair, since they tend to be driest. Watch our video for application tips.

Spray Throughout The Day

Hair tends to get dull as the day goes on. Use a finishing spray like Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist whenever you need a little boost, or at the end of the day if you want to brighten up before going out. Lightly spray it on dry hair and let the nourishing vitamins and conditioning camelina oils do their job—the smell alone is enough to get you hooked.
