Rub-a-Dub-Dub: How to Make the Most of Your Tub

A leisurely bath is one of the best ways to relax your body and your mind, but it’s also a time commitment. If you’re going to block out your schedule (away from your precious Instagram feed and DVR lineup—not to mention friends and family), it’s worth taking a few extra steps to maximize your bliss. Here are 5 ways to turn any bathroom into a little slice of spaland.

Take a Time Out

Schedule your soaking time, and commit to it. Block out at least 20 minutes, turn off your iPhone, and forget about that presentation you have to finish. It can wait.

Set the Mood

There’s a reason why spas invest in scented candles like they’re a below-market stock—not only do they provide soft, calming light, but they also have aromatherapy benefits. Naturally relaxing scents like the sandalwood in MALIN+GOETZ’s Cannabis candle can enhance relaxation and reduce stress. Light a few candles at least five minutes before soaking time.

Enhance your Water

Your bath water should be hot, not scalding. While experts suggest a temperature between 96 and 104 degrees, we don’t expect you to break out the thermometer. Instead, use a good old-fashioned toe test—if you can’t stand comfortably in the bath, you surely shouldn’t be lying in it. As the water’s running, sprinkle in a generous amount bath salts like Mox Botanicals Body Soak, which will help loosen muscles, and soften and scent skin.

Get Rid of the Bad Stuff

Bath time is the perfect time to exfoliate, because when your skin is softened, dead cells are even easier to scrub away. Caudalie’s Divine Body Scrub is filled with essential oils like argan and hibiscus, which also make your bath water more luxurious. Don’t forget to give your face a little TLC too—apply a detoxifying mask like WEI™ Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask to scoop out pores and clear up blemishes while you zone out.

And Restore the Good

Even the most tepid tub can dry out skin, which is why it’s important to replenish skin with a moisturizing body wash like Tocca’s heavenly Cleopatra Bagno Profumato Body Wash. After you towel off, be sure to slather on a rich lotion like Whish Three Wishes Body Butter.
