6 Volumizing Tricks for Thin Hair

From out-of-control curls to lackluster color, we all have our personal hair frustrations. For me, that issue is volume: I’ve got limp locks that seem to grow thinner with each passing minute. Lucky for me (and for you), there are plenty of ways to fake a fuller mane—and they don’t include a Donald Trump comb-over. Here are my tested-and-approved tricks.

Trick #1: Massage Your Scalp

Exfoliation isn’t just for your complexion. Treating your scalp to a weekly massage clears pores of follicle-blocking sebum. Using your fingertips, apply gentle pressure to your scalp and mimic the motion of squeezing a lime. (Bonus: it feels really good.)
Birchbox Recommends: Philip Kingsley’s Scalp Toner. Massage this clarifying toner into your scalp to promote maximum hair growth.

Trick #2: Focus on Your Roots

Before blow-dying hair, prep with a lightweight mousse (it's come a long way since the 80s). Next, use a large rounded brush to pull sections of your hair up from the root, aiming your blow-dryer at your scalp for maximum lift.
Birchbox Recommends: Oscar Blandi Hair Lift Thickening Mousse. The high-tech formula instantly binds to hair, giving it thickness.

Trick #3: Flip and Spritz—the Right Way

We’ve been using the flip-head/comb-hair-forward/mist-with-hairspray/stand-up trick ever since our girl crush on Kelly Kapowski. But it turns out we had the technique wrong: Hair spray takes approximately 30 seconds to dry and set. Let it take hold of the root before you stand upright.
Birchbox Recommends: Ojon volume advance™ Volumizing Styling Spray. Loaded with ojon oil and a blend of botanicals, the amplifying formula is designed specifically for fine hair and sinks into strands to make them visibly fuller.

Trick #4: Don't Ignore Your Ends

We learned this quick tip from celeb hairstylist and Birchbox fave, Mike Vogel. After styling your strands, pinch small sections of ends between your thumb and pointer finger and gently rub together in a back and forth motion. This simple move breaks up clumps and separates ends for a fuller look.
Birchbox Recommends: Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture and Volume Spray. Spritz the invisible formula onto the tips of your hair and start twirling for a sexy bedhead look.

Trick #5: Customize Your Shower-Time Essentials

You use face products formulated for your skin type—now it's time to extend that customization to your hair. Unlike traditional shampoos and conditioners, volumizing varieties work to expand the diameter of each individual hair shaft.
Birchbox Recommends: Rahua Voluminous Shampoo and Conditioner. This strand-expanding duo is rich in Amazonian Rahua oil, a rare extract that fortifies weak hair while regenerating hair follicles.

Trick #6: See a Dermatologist

From stress to pregnancy, there are countless causes of hair loss. Most fine locks can be chalked up to genetics—thanks, Grandma—but an underlying health condition could potentially be the culprit.
Birchbox Recommends: Rule out any cause for concern by scheduling an appointment with your dermatologist or a trichologist (fancy name for a hair and scalp specialist).
