Snowed In? Beat Winter Boredom With This Fantastically Fun Manicure Kit

Friday morning I awoke to a white glow radiating from my window, a glow caused by a fresh, six-inch layer of snow. (I also woke up to frozen pipes, but that’s a tale for another time—thanks, Hercules.) Resigned to working from home and spending the day close to my radiator, I decided to take the extra time in my PJs to experiment with Nail Rock’s new manicure kits, which come in four fun, unexpected textures: glitter (in ruby red), sequin (a mix of emerald green and silver), velvet (a moody eggplant), and caviar (a celebratory silver). Previously only available in the UK, these babies will be sampled in some of your January Birchboxes.

There are a few things to keep in mind before breaking open your Nail Rock set—you’ll want to set aside some time and space, and you’ll want to get anything you’re doing with your hands (like cooking, doing your hair, or getting dressed) out of the way first. After checking those items off your list, set up your station and prepare to play!

Each kit comes with a nail color and a pot (roughly the size of a small eyeshadow), full of the texturizing formula. Once you’ve pushed back your cuticles, paint on two even layers of the nail color on the nails you want to texture. While the polish is still wet, press your nails (one at a time) into the pot of glitter, sequins, caviar beads, or velvety powder. Next, queue up an episode of your favorite TV show and let your nails dry for a good 15 to 20 minutes. Once the time is up, lightly brush off any excess texture and you’re out the door. And when you’re ready to change up your look, you don’t need anything more than your regular nail polish remover. If you get lost, check out our UK colleagues’ amazingly helpful GIF tutorial:

I find that each textured manicure feels wildly different from the next—the velvet finish is smooth and chic, where caviar shimmers like a mountain of miniature pearls. The glitter finish reminds me of Dorothy’s slippers more than anything else, with hundreds of glimmering pieces of micro-glitter; while the sequins, larger and more light catching, dazzle like tiny disco balls.

Till the snow clears up I’ll be indoors, dressing up my nails till they have a place to go.
