St. Lucia X Birchbox Man: The Playlist

The latest St. Lucia album, When the Night, gives us visions an ‘80s movie packed with big hair, bright colors, and beautiful young people performing a choreographed dance, or possibly choreographed barrel rolls in fighter jets. Which is to say: We love it. Awash in saxophone solos, synth-pop runs, and feel-good harmonies, the record channels Peter Gabriel, Fleetwood Mac and other top artists from the era when Jean-Philip Grobler, St. Lucia’s front man and mastermind, was growing up. Curious to hear what kind of modern musical company Grobler keeps on his own headphones, we asked him for some of his current favorites. We expected tunes as addictive and alive as his band’s own sound and found ourselves delightfully rewarded.

Check out St. Lucia’s picks and commentary below, and stream the full playlist over at Spotify.

Kate Boy, The Way We Are
“Kate Boy is one of the most exciting 'newer' bands out there. Their sound is kind of like taking all of the great Swedish electro-pop music of the last 5 or so years and distilling it into one band.”

Empire of the Sun, I'll Be Around
“I've been a Luke Steele fan for a long time, and I think the new Empire of the Sun album is one of the best pop albums in recent memory. It's kind of like being hit over the head again and again with amazing pop-songs. This is one of the standouts.”

Arcade Fire, Joan of Arc
“I LOVE the new Arcade Fire album. I love that you can hear the process of the band searching for something new and reinventing themselves fearlessly. Again, this is one of my favorites off of the album, and I think one of their best songs yet.”

Sky Ferreira, You're Not the One
“There's so much great pop music coming out at the moment that it's sometimes hard to keep up with it. If you love good pop music, it will be hard for you to deny the power of this song. One for the ages.”

Cut Copy, Walking in the Sky
“I love Cut Copy, and while their new album isn't really anything 'new' for them, this track is an epic and classic sounding standout.”

Rush Midnight, Crush
“A moody standout from our friends Rush Midnight.”

Kelela, Guns & Synths

John Wizards, Limpop
“I'm always incredibly proud when I hear good music coming out of my home country of South Africa, and John Wizards' album is without doubt in my top five albums of this year. There is so much imagination in his work, and he introduces a lot of African sub-genres that I'm sure most listeners will be hearing for the first time.”

HAERTS, All For You
“A shameless self-plug here. HAERTS are some of our best friends and I've been working with them for a long time. This is one of my favorite tracks that I've done with them. Nini's voice, as per usual, is heartbreaking.”

Charli XCX, You (Ha Ha Ha)
“Our good friend Charli XCX just keeps getting better. I'm pretty sure that in 10 or 20 years people are going to look back and see her as one of the best pop songwriters of our generation. Just listen to this and try not to dance.”
