While most people associate a winter wardrobe with turtlenecks and cashmere beanies, my seasonal shift as a beauty editor is a little different—think dark lip colors, sparkly polish, and party-ready hair. Even though I hate (with a capital H) cold weather, I adore winter beauty looks. Unlike summer’s barely-there minimal makeup and fuss-free hair, winter is the time to go ultraglam. Keep your beauty routine up to date with this roundup of the hottest (er, coolest?) trends of the season.
As a member of the red family, this color is far less intimidating—and far more wearable—than other dark hues. The dramatic and elegant shade comes in a variety of finishes, including matte, glossy, and semi-sheer. Great for all skin tones, it’s ideally paired with dewy skin and little other makeup.

Think beyond traditional gold, silver, and bronze—the latest mani craze spans a variety of sparkly colors. From gunmetal to rose gold and burnished green, any shade can shine with a chrome finish. And if you want to push the envelope even further, opt for holographic formulas.

A runaway hit for several seasons, the braid trend shows no signs of slowing down. While there are innumerable variations out there, the biggest style right now is a parted down the middle crown-meets-Heidi braid that's both romantic and carefree. If you’re not a fan of wispy flyaways and frizz, ditch the texturizing spray and opt for mousse instead.

Just as a bright lip can steal the show, so can bold brows. Before you let your arches take center stage, however, make sure they’re well groomed and fully filled in. To amp up the drama, choose a pencil or gel that’s a shade or two darker than your actual brows to really make them pop. As for the rest of your makeup, all you need is some strategic concealer and a swipe or two of mascara.

While black and gray will always create a classic smoky eye, a new color scheme is gaining traction: plum. This moody purple isn't a huge stretch from more conventional brown tones. An easy day to night color—just layer on extra pigment before hitting the town—it looks especially pretty when worn with bare skin and pale lips.
