If last year was all about ombré, this year is all about Technicolor tresses. Leading the rainbow hair pack are Hollywood starlets and musician It girls, from Nicole Richie's lavender to Katy Perry's slime green. To get to the ends of this new color craze, we spoke to five superstar LA stylists to find out which famous manes got it right. Our experts also share which cuts work best with bright hues, how to experiment before taking the full plunge, and surefire ways to prevent fading.
Nicole Richie has led the pastel hair charge with her lavender hue. "She's definitely the new pop color trendsetter," says Dell Miller, master colorist at Spoke & Weal, LA. Miller adds that social media has been a big influence on this movement (just search #rainbowhair on Instagram).
Miller is also a big fan of Rihanna's new pink 'do, but recommends starting with tips or highlights before coloring your whole mane this way.
For maintenance, Miller notes that applying deep conditioning treatments like Ojon’s damage reverse Restorative Hair Treatment Plus before and after coloring sessions will help “showcase your color and keep hair looking moisturized, strong, and healthy."
Ready to graduate to bright green like Katy Perry? To help keep your new hue as vibrant as hers, Jennie Bowen, a stylist at The Hive LA, suggests using a color depositing conditioner. Bowen also recommends pairing show-stopping color with a manageable and effortless haircut, such as a short chop or messy, shoulder-length bob.
The star with the best rainbow hair by far? Model Chloe Nørgaard, according to Jefferson Tangradi, colorist and co-founder of The Well. "She always manages to come up with great palettes that suit her colorful personality," he says. Tangradi told us that purple is the most-requested shade in his salon right now. "It's an easy tone for a subtle transition, whether it is dark purple in dark hair or lavender purple in blonde hair."
Kelly Osbourne is one of the few celebs who can effortlessly mesh purple and punk. "She has been able to take her signature lilac locks from casual looks to red carpet events—and it really works!" says Oliver Ifergan, founder of Twist by Oliver. If the idea of permanent dye sends shivers down your back, Ifergan adds that there are plenty of options to test out colors, such as temporary hair chalk or clip-in hairpieces.
Make like Demi Lovato and make sure you pick a shade that that complements your skin tone, advises Janine Jarman, celeb stylist and owner of Hairroin Salon. Jarman's top tips for keeping your shade from fading include having your colorist make a custom color conditioner for you to take home, washing hair with cool water, and keeping hair out of direct sunlight.
