Call me a creature of habit, but when I find a product that works, I tend to stick with it for a very long time. However, as interning at Birchbox has taught me, it’s important to keep an open mind when it comes to things like makeup techniques, ingredients, and entirely new products altogether (Miracle Skin Transformer, I’m looking at you). In an effort to shake things up, I took a week to test drive everything from a wildly different eyeliner to a pumpkin-infused face mask. Here’s what I learned:
My brows are sparse at best, so today I amped them with Benefit’s Gimme Brow. Years of ballet recitals with comically thick brows have left me hesitant to experiment with any brow enhancing products, but this banished all my fears. The mascara-like wand coated my puny hairs and built coverage naturally for fuller, darker brows. Unlike other caked-on powder formulas I’ve tried, I didn’t feel like I was “wearing brows.” Instead it was just my brows…only better.
On my nails, I layered OPI’s Sheer Tint Top Coat over Color Club’s lilac-hued polish in Pardon My French. The base coat made the perfect pastel for spring and the high gloss top coat amplified the color for a vivid, almost-neon purple. My nails looked like juicy little gummy bears!
I hate washing my frizzy, unmanageable hair every day, but thanks to Lulu Organics Hair Powder, I finally hit that sweet spot of second-day tousled locks—without the greasy roots. I am now one step closer to achieving my dream of perfectly-rumpled French girl hair.
After trying 100% Pure’s Organic Body Lotion, it now has a place on my bedside table for deep hydration before bed. The 100-percent natural and organic ingredients are ultrapampering, and no fillers means this lotion is superconcentrated and rich, perfect for nighttime TLC.
Post-morning shower, I applied a few drops of amika Obliphica Hair Treatment to my damp hair. Having superthick hair—seriously, hairstylists have compared it to a horse’s tail—means I’ve been around the block when it comes to leave-in conditioners and frizz control products. Halfway through the day I put my hair up in a bun and by the time I let it down hours later, I had perfectly wavy locks that were shiny—not crispy—thanks to the intensely hydrating obliphica (a.k.a. sea buckhorn berry) oil.
Later, I misted my face with the Caudalie Beauty Elixir I had stashed in my gym bag for a postworkout boost of radiance.
Ever since I could wield an eyeliner pencil, I’ve aspired to achieve the quintessential cat eye. POP Beauty’s Cat Eyes crayon glided onto my lids smoothly and evenly, making a black line across the upper lid so exact, you’d have thought it was drawn by a pro. It’s going to take some extra practice to master the essential flick for a soft cat eye, however.
After cleansing my face, I tried out Michael Todd’s Pumpkin Nutrient Rich Facial Mask. Not only is the mask a pumpkin-pie orange, it smells just like the Thanksgiving Day dessert. Harnessing the natural nutrients found in pumpkins, the mask exfoliates to removes dead skin and boosts radiance—proving to me that organic doesn’t have to mean less effective.
In the morning, I smoothed on Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight before my makeup as a glow-boosting primer and skin-tone evening BB cream. Since I love products that do double—or quadruple!—duty, it’s safe to say that this part BB Cream/luminizer/primer/sunscreen is now a superpower addition to my makeup bag.
As a Rose Salve devotee, my care philosophy has always been very “no muss, no fuss.” Today I applied Pixi Beauty’s Lip Blush in Happiness in the morning, layered on some balm, and by midday, my lips were still tinted the perfect rosy hue. While I’d reserve Happiness for special occasions, I liked Purity, the lighter shade, for everyday wear.
While I generally wear my nails buffed to a natural shine, I decided to try Color Club’s baby green nail polish in London Calling, which manages to be simultaneously electric and pastel. Maybe if I paint my nails in enough pastel hues, it will finally be spring!
After years of sticking to my deep brown pencil eyeliner, stila’s sparkle waterproof liquid eyeliner in electric was a big departure. I was flabbergasted by how smoothly and easily I was able to glide on the perfect line. Keeping the rest of my makeup minimal, I was able to wear the vibrant liner all day and into the night. [Ed note: it looked amazing!]
