Who doesn’t love a good stroll down memory lane? Good, funny, and slightly embarrassing—these are our favorite memories from the past three years.
Nerd alert! Taking a break from their studies at Harvard Business School, Hayley and Katia celebrate Halloween by dressing up as the crashing stock market. When they weren’t costume-partying, the ladies were scheming up a new business tentatively called In The Know Beauty. Thankfully, they settled on the name Birchbox.
Talk beta to me. Hayley and Katia have a website, inventory, and 200 paying customers—everything they need to put their discovery commerce business model to the test. One big takeaway from the beta days? Don’t glue the products down! Today, spill-prone perfume vials and nail polish bottles are packaged safely in a colorful “pillow pack.”
A Birchbox blast from the past: Take a gander at our first newsletter. We may have ditched the cheesy subject lines but Deborah Lippmann’s eye-catching polishes still rank high on our list of nail lacquer favorites.
A new tradition is born: Bagel Thursdays. After scoring 10,000 subscribers, we celebrate with hearty breakfast and champagne. While the mimosas were a one-time thing, we still kick off every Thursday with a bounty of carbs and cream cheese.
For our first event, we invite over 100 customers to get the first look at an up-and-coming trend: feather hair extensions. Beloved by Ke$ha and Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler, the coiffure craze eventually leads to a country-wide shortage of rooster plumes.
Staffers receive an email from our fearless leaders titled, “Important Announcement.” Inside, we learn about the wonders of something called the Workday Workout. Every hour on the hour, Birchboxers take a break from the hustle and bustle to do pushups, planks, lunges, and so much more.
Gentlemen, meet your new wingman. Designed to help guys up their game, Birchbox Man launches boxes filled with top-tier grooming and lifestyle products, an online Guide, and jam-packed Shop. The men’s service will go on to debut partnership-themed boxes with heavy hitters like USA’s SUITS and Men’s Health.
After a little coaxing (and the promise of cookies), our Editorial Director Mollie shows us how to use Wei’s golden root-infused clay masks. While the earthy material might not seem grownup or glamorous, our first mask tutorial proves that playing with mud can do wonders for your complexion.
London Fashion Week means zipping around in style. Our Birchbox UK teammates take over a fleet of London’s iconic black cabs to help editors and customers alike get around town (and experience mini makeovers!).
In the most creative Birchbox upcycling we’ve ever seen to date, Birchboxer Jodi uses her empty box to incubate Sebastopol goose eggs. Several weeks later, four happy little geese join Birchbox’s growing community.
Subscriber Erica’s sleuth-y boyfriend hijacks her May Birchbox, slips in a gorgeous sparkler, and adds a sweet written proposal. Double the good news: she says yes and she loves her May Birchbox.
In honor of our global rebrand, our team puts together this little video. From New York to Paris, London to Barcelona, it’s clear that we all have a lot in common—just check out all the cross-Continental silliness!
