So much can happen in a year—just look at Birchbox, founded waaay back in 2010 (oh, the tender days of our youth!). The past year alone has brought us plenty to celebrate—like our three-year anniversary—as well as tons of surprises we couldn’t have seen coming. One thing is for sure: 2013 gave our editors no shortage of things to write about. Behold, our lighthearted take on the year’s biggest news in beauty, fashion, and pop culture.
On July 22, 2013, her Royal Highness delivered a healthy baby boy—and the crowd went gaga. Fun fact: The new prince caught the very last date for which he could be considered a Cancer in the zodiac. He was “born on the cusp”—which means he’s likely to show some traits of regal Leo. No surprise there.

In one 6-minute VMA performance, Miley Cyrus managed to explode her sweet Disney-girl rep, catapult the term “twerking” into the public consciousness, and provoke a major backlash. One thing’s for sure, whether you like her or now: Miley Cyrus became a household name that night. And come Halloween, her “Wrecking Ball” video sparked some truly inspired costumes. Let’s just say, the ripple effects of her antics are still unfolding.
The great beauty debate of 2013: Can skincare lovers really have it all? CC creams answered this question with a resounding “yes!” A next-level update on complexion-correcting BB creams, these multitaskers tend to be lighter-weight and easier to blend than their predecessors. The sunscreen gurus at Supergoop!® led the way, with a CC cream infused with SPF 35, while natural brand Yes To™ followed with a grapefruit-infused version.
The world reacted in shock (and not a little awe) when the A-list celeb published an op-ed in The New York Times on May 14, revealing her decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. She carries the gene BRCA1—which puts her at high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. Jolie was praised for coming forward about the procedure—and paving the way for other women to take similar precautions and get tested for the gene.

Once thought to exist solely for the exchange of raunchy photos, Snapchat entered the kid-friendly mainstream. Even marketers have hopped on the bandwagon, releasing limited-time deals through the trendy app. In November, the brainchild of two Stanford students was valued between $3 and $4 billion. (Not bad, kids. Not bad.)
It felt like a long time coming: Jennifer Lawrence scooped up an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Silver Linings Playbook. The general consensus was that she charmed the pants off everyone at the Oscars—despite taking a (well-documented) tumble on her way to receiving the award. We can’t wait to see what she does in future roles.

For just over two weeks in October, the U.S. government entered a shutdown when Congress couldn’t reach an agreement over the 2014 budget. Approximately 800,000 government employees were furloughed (prompting many a “government shutdown party”). One slightly milder consequence: The beloved “Panda Cam” at the National Zoo was turned off during this period. Our thoughts and prayers were with the pandas at that time.
2013 was the year of the pixie cut. Many celebs took the plunge and cropped their hair, with mixed results. Beyoncé shared her super-short chop on Twitter, but quickly transitioned to a longer style. Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and of course Jennifer Lawrence rocked this edgy look with aplomb.

Wedge sneakers had a major moment —but burned out pretty quickly. We see the appeal of the extra height (and they certainly made our stems look superlong in our skinniest skinny jeans), but the trend has seen its heyday. Maybe it just felt kind of perverse to take the most comfy type of shoe and turn it into the…least comfy.

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2013 also happened to be a highly covetable gem: emerald. We went gaga for this elegant jewel tone, and so did the runways. This December, we have our eyes trained on the must-have hue for 2014: Radiant Orchid. To get ahead of trend, deck your nails in LAQA & Co.’ Bells & Whistles. This gorgeous color alludes to the intricate designs on the orchids most commonly found in the U.S. Bring on the purple reign!
