It’s our policy that anything can be enhanced with a modest infusion of booze (prime examples: chocolate cake with whiskey, beer can chicken). But that’s not the only reason this sake-steeped shaving cream—that has garnered awards from both GQ and Esquire—is a welcome addition to our grooming arsenal. The sake is just one of a slew of special ingredients that combine to provide extra lubrication and smooth razor glide. The formula also features volcanic ash and adzuki beans indigenous to the Japanese town of Yuzuri Hara, where inhabitants are known for both their longevity and enviably youthful complexions.
I bought this from Birchbox purely on a hunch... the description, the packaging and the reviews sounded good to me. It looks really cool... it's an irredescent, metallic aqua color and goes on smooth. I like the smell pretty much, but there's something slightly off about it. Maybe it's the sake, but I don't think so. Not that it matters, but my jar is black. I would buy it again, but I think there are better products.4
I have had nothing but good times using this shave cream. I'd recommend it to anyone. I did find that I had to use more than I thought I would as it tended to absorb into my face quickly. (That tingly feeling though... it's nice!) So I ended up going through the whole container in about 2 months. I'm buying a second one but at around $30.00 I'll probably be looking for something else 2 months from now.
Also, this isn't really something that Birchbox can control but it is worth mentioning. I bought my product in June and it spent most of it's travels on a very hot UPS truck. I was home when the box arrived and took it inside immediately to open it but the product was like a soup when I opened it. I don't know if that affected my experience with the product at all but once it had been inside for around 24 hours it had regained a bit more cohesion and was easy to use.
Interesting appearance texture and scent. I find myself using more than my standard go-to shave cream because it doesn't lather well. Leaves a pleasant tingle. Did I say, interesting appearance and texture?4
Because I also shave my head, I've used every shave cream known to man! This includes the Art of Shaving as well as what I considered the best with Truefitt and Hill's Ultimate Shave Cream and this SAKE stuff is the BOMB! Do yourself a favor and use John Allan's Pre Shave Oil, and then apply this cream using a badger brush and shave then, BOOM! Enjoy!5
