This water filter is incredibly unpleasant to use. The issue is that they spent more time advertising their design than actually perfecting it.

You will constantly spill water because it collects at the top of the mechanism or gets trapped between the glass and plastic housing. Even worse you will splash it all over your kitchen when you go to refill it due to the fact that the spout cover 'sticks' instead of depressing to let the water in.

The height of the filter will probably prevent you from fitting it in most shelves of your fridge, if you can fit it at all (truly this will only fit in a "big" fridge - like one with french doors). Even if you can fit it, you will realize how inefficient the circular footprint is.

I bought this filter for one reason: it has a glass body instead of plastic. Unfortunately its literally a chore to use. Dont buy.

Worst water "filter" ever

You will find many so called reviews for the Soma online, but most are just marketing hype discussing it's aesthetics and eco-friendly background. They don't mention it's failure at it's primary purpose - being a functional water filter.

Go to fill it and unless you use an extremely gentle stream the water will reflect off of the top and spill everywhere. Not a one time thing, expect this repeatedly.

Even with a very gentle fill water will still collect on the top of the filter, so every time you go to pour a glass it will slop over your hand/pants/etc. Expect this to happen often, as even a topped off fill won't get you two large glasses of water.

The most prominent issue of course? The company has yet to publish that it actually filters out... anything. Chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, chemicals - isn't the whole point of a water filter to get rid of that stuff?

Don't worry, you can just go back to your old filter. It's not like they locked you into a year long prepaid subscription model. Wait...

While the glass carafe may be an improvement over the plastic Brita or other filter systems, it is both too heavy and awkward to use. The top is poorly designed plastic and falls apart easily, making both pouring into and out of the carafe cumbersome. There is no way to actually know when any individual customer would need a new filter but you are required to sign up for ongoing deliveries. I am sorry I bought this product without seeing/handling it first and cannot find anywhere on their website to cancel my subscription.

Pitcher is nice looking

Great design and the bottle looks good and is of good quality. The water drips when pouring though. If you remove the filter and filter holder ( which defeats the purpose of this item) then there are no drips when pouring. For the price I want a better product.

Filtration specs needed

The most important thing about a water filter is whether it does the job it's supposed to do. So far I have found no information from Soma on what contaminants the Soma Water Filter filters out, or any third-party documentation on this. Lead? Chloroform? Arsenic? Other chemicals? Flouride? Pesticides? There's lot of hype about how pretty the decanter looks on a dining room table, and the fact that black specks don't appear in the container or in water as its poured. While I applaud the fact the filter is biodegradable, and the container is made of glass, not plastic, wise consumers need more facts, and a company that purports to be so environmentally conscious should be more forthcoming.

better looking than other pitchers, but not amazing
Purchased

I bought this item here because the company seems to only have a Facebook website. I can't subscribe to the filter service without giving my contact info to FB, which is very annoying. I already have an Aqua Ovo at home, but I wanted this for the office and travel. I will have to figure out a work around or send it back.

None of the marketing information quantifies what impurities get filtered out or how much. The water passes through the filter so quickly that I do wonder if it really removes much at all. Yes, I did properly soak it and flush it first, as directed.

The container is attractive enough, but I would like the filter holder even better if it were stainless steel. Just because the filter itself uses compostable plastic doesn't mean the filter holder and lid have to be plastic.

Nice but needs improvement

First and foremost I love the Soma. From the design to the function I think it's great. I will say though that it can be a bit awkward and maybe too heavy for some. Also, I am just assuming that it is filtering out those unwanted "things" that are found in tap water - Hopefully I am right. The only thing that I really do not like is how you take apart the top. I feel like I am on the verge of breaking it every time I clean it. However, and again, I love it.

Better than Brita

I received a free Soma when they first started the company as a giveaway. I was very excited to receive it. The design is sleek and modern, however the first 8 or so times I used it, the water tasted funky. I'd definitely recommend soaking the filter much longer than instructions dictate.

How do I get the replacement filters?

Pro:
Look cool on the counter top
Water taste good
Fits in fridge

Con:
No clue where to order the filters
Constantly having to refill

Other:
Kind hard to pour

I like it enough to keep it, but where do the filters come from? Make it easier to order. Should have been more automated when I ordered the unit.
