Baxter of California Blue Steel “Not a Replica” Straight Razor

Birchbox Breakdown

Like an heirloom pipe, or a gunslinger’s pistol, some items transcend their materials to become something that borders on sacred. “Not a Replica” is one of them. Handcrafted from hardened steel and American mettle, this superlative razor excels in every aspect, from the tempered blue blade to the perfectly balanced handle. You won’t find a finer piece of steel this side of Yokohama.

How to Use

Invest in this razor, and never another. The metal is heat-treated in a molten salt bath to prevent oxidation, then frozen in liquid nitrogen to harden it even further. A special bluing treatment protects against rust, and adds a unique navy finish to match the matte black handle. Each blade comes with a deerskin pouch, a storage box, and a hex wrench to tighten the pin.

You're a man now my son

I urge you to read or watch videos on how to save with one of these before doing it. Else you will find yourself with a lot of cuts.
It has a good hone and keeps a sharp edge. A little tricky at first if you are a noob, but once you get the hang of it, you can call yourself a bad A.

Admittedly, I questioned my ability to place this goregous sturdy blue steel razor anywhere near my face in fear that I would slice the common carotids in my neck.

I watched a few Youtube videos before getting started and not only survived, but also achieved the shave of my life!!! I could not image ever using anything else. Not to mention it's kept its razor sharp edge for months now.

I feel like such a man pulling this bad boy out to vicerate my whiskers.

Once you go blue, you never go back!

Pricey, But Worth It!

I got this as part of a holiday gift for my boyfriend. Although he prefers the Baxter Safety Razor at the moment, he has tried the straight razor and does use it once in a while, when he has the time to dedicate to a slow and careful shave. He's talked about a Straight Razor for ages and finally has one...but still prefers the easy use of the safety razor.

The quality? Incredible! The shaving result? Closest and smoothest shave ever! Worth it? Yes!

As other reviewers have the videos on Baxter's website. Do it, seriously. You spent the money on it...learn how to use it properly.

My first straight razor

I was surprised to find this one Birchbox, but it's awesome that they sell it. I've had this now for a little over a year. Honestly, this review may end up being more about convincing you to try and use a straight razor.
I have nothing to compare it to. I've never had a shavette or even a really nice regular razor. However, I wanted to be a gentleman so I thought that I would try this out. I was a little deceived when I first got it as the scales are steel, but I was hoping for wood (scales is the word for handle, essentially). That's my fault, though. I have probably had around 30 shaves with it and it gives an incredibly smooth shave. I love it to death. I am not sure if it's specified here, but the blade, I think, is 5/8ths which is I think the normal size, but if you wanted to go thinner you could, but you could also go with a larger blade.
If you're a beginner, please do research on straight razors before you begin, though. Also, keep in mind, as a beginner, it takes a lot of time before you get the smoothest, unbloodiest shave of your life. I mean that both shaving and learning how to shave with it. For instance, it takes me probably 40 minutes to shave (down from like an hour) and I've used it about 30-40 times. (and still haven't perfected it yet).
This was my first razor and I absolutely love it so if you're a beginner, this is a good purchase. Please, however, make sure you do your research on how to use and shave with a straight razor. One last thing to add: I've read reviews of other straight razors and sometimes they don't ship "shave ready," which means you have to sharpen the blade. This straight razor DOES come shave ready which is fantastic.

This the only razor you will need

I have tried this. It is heaven on earth and my face. It's more than the sleek and stylish shape and color. It delivers and clean and precise shave. I suggest seeking out proper shaving techniques and maintenance for a straight razor as this is a premium product.
