I was surprised to find this one Birchbox, but it's awesome that they sell it. I've had this now for a little over a year. Honestly, this review may end up being more about convincing you to try and use a straight razor.
I have nothing to compare it to. I've never had a shavette or even a really nice regular razor. However, I wanted to be a gentleman so I thought that I would try this out. I was a little deceived when I first got it as the scales are steel, but I was hoping for wood (scales is the word for handle, essentially). That's my fault, though. I have probably had around 30 shaves with it and it gives an incredibly smooth shave. I love it to death. I am not sure if it's specified here, but the blade, I think, is 5/8ths which is I think the normal size, but if you wanted to go thinner you could, but you could also go with a larger blade.
If you're a beginner, please do research on straight razors before you begin, though. Also, keep in mind, as a beginner, it takes a lot of time before you get the smoothest, unbloodiest shave of your life. I mean that both shaving and learning how to shave with it. For instance, it takes me probably 40 minutes to shave (down from like an hour) and I've used it about 30-40 times. (and still haven't perfected it yet).
This was my first razor and I absolutely love it so if you're a beginner, this is a good purchase. Please, however, make sure you do your research on how to use and shave with a straight razor. One last thing to add: I've read reviews of other straight razors and sometimes they don't ship "shave ready," which means you have to sharpen the blade. This straight razor DOES come shave ready which is fantastic.
