It all started in the South of France. For centuries, people flocked to the village of Avène to bathe in its remarkably pure thermal springs, which were famed for healing a variety of skin diseases: The water, laced with trace minerals from the surrounding mountains, was perfectly suited to calm and soften skin. In 1966, laboratory owner Pierre Fabre opened the Avène Hydrotherapy Center to transfer the soothing powers of the thermal springs to modern dermatological treatments. A line of skincare products followed in 1989, infused with the nutrient-laden waters to heal and calm sensitive skin. To this day, Avène continues to use the mineral-rich, pH-balanced spring water in all its products.
