It all began with a song. Well, that's not entirely true. But Deborah Lippmann did begin working as a nail artist in Arizona to support her other dream of becoming a jazz singer. Lippmann's clients began spreading the word about her amazing manicures and soon she was on speed dial for celebrities and editors around the country. In 1998 Lippmann mixed "Satin Doll" for Mariah Carey to wear for the Oscars and realized the next step was creating her own collection of lacquers.
