The idea for this San Francisco-based company came from years of frustration with the ubiquitous—but ill-designed—Brita filter. Co-founder Mike Del Ponte was fed up with water spillage, black flecks, and a filter replacement system that just didn’t work. And, he discovered, there were plenty of others who felt the same way. With the help of Kickstarter funding, he created a next-generation water filter that pairs a sleek, hourglass-shaped carafe with a 100% compostable, 100% organic filter.
Sustainability and design. The environmentally minded company aims to drastically reduce the nearly 38 billion plastic water bottles that are thrown away every year—without sacrificing aesthetics. The glass carafe is as good looking as it is good for the earth and the coconut-based filters are 100% compostable.
David Beeman, who designed Soma’s water filter, has been in the industry for 35 years and is man behind the water formulas for Starbucks, Peet’s, and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (to name a few).
