Birchbox Breakdown

The hair buzzword of the moment? Texture. And this set gets you there with a dry shampoo spray to cleanse and add volume, a dry shampoo styling paste hybrid (which gives hair a matte look and extra grip), and the brand’s latest shampoo, which imparts tousled second-day texture in a single wash. It’s all the desert island-worthy picks you’d ever need to take your strands from flat to full.

How to Use

Work shampoo through wet hair. Lather and rinse. For best results, don’t use conditioner afterwards. Rub dry shampoo paste between hands and work it through dried hair. In the days that follow, spray dry shampoo at the roots to absorb grease and dirt.

maybe i'm using it wrong?

Overall I'm disappointed in this set. The cactus shampoo does give serious texture, but that texture is best described as "dried out hay that you don't want to touch". It can't be used more than twice in a row before your hair demands some conditioner, which instantly negates the texturizing effects. The dry shampoo didn't impress me and left my hair gritty while still greasy looking. I have no clue what to do with the dry shampoo paste. Definitely will not order again, but glad I tried out the samples. For reference, my hair is stick straight, fine, but thick, and prone to grease. These products did give me a bit of volume, but it wasn't worth the dried out feeling it gave my hair.

Yes yes yes!!

I originally got this because the Cactus shampoo was out of stock but fell in love with the dry shampoo and the paste! Leaves my hair light, clean and textured!

yes, yes, yes.

Wash hair with Cactus. Feel the difference instantly; hair has texture & volume, even long hair. Wash hair with it daily & texture becomes unstoppable! Skip hair washing for a day & use Death Valley, a touch of Badlands, instead... Perfection. Death Valley has been a favorite for years, but alternating it with Cactus is a new favorite.

Cactus Shampoo is fantastic

I'm lukewarm on the dry shampoo in both forms (it's a super serious dry shampoo, IMHO, which is more than I need/want). The dry shampoo leaves my hair too stiff and I can't get my fingers through hair, really, after using it. I'm not crazy about dry shampoos for this very reason - I don't like the feel of my hair after using them, however effective they might be for their purposes. However, my stylist loves these dry shampoos, especially the paste. What I will say, is they do what they are supposed to do - I'm just not crazy about dry shampoo.

My stylist uses the Cactus shampoo on me and no other pre-styling products before blow drying and styling my hair. The texture-izing shampoo is enough to give my hair some gumption for styling. My hair type is: fine strands of hair, but lots of hair. So, it's fine hair, except not. My hair style is short, but not pixie.

I had used the dry shampoo spray and the texture/dry paste before---while I like both products, I'm not crazy about them. However, I really wanted to try the Cactus shampoo, so I decided to get this set since it seemed like a great value. I have colored hair that is very fine and has become very oily in my menopausal years. After reading reviews from other bloggers, I decided it might be best to apply conditioner to my hair first (it's a tad fragile and can be dry on the ends even with the oily roots/scalp) and then shampoo with the Cactus shampoo. Thank goodness I did because even with the step, my hair was still very stiff and difficult to comb through after shampooing---I finally had to apply some detangler to brush through it. When I dried my hair with the blow dryer (I wanted a smooth and voluminous look rather than an air-dried beachy look), I didn't notice any additional volume or "va-voom" I would have expected with a shampoo that is supposed to add texture to your hair. Perhaps if you wash and follow with conditioner even though it recommends you don't, it will be more pleasant to use periodically. Maybe I expected too much from the Cactus shampoo, but I was hoping it would put some "oomph" in my hair.
