In 1977, Jane and Jean Ford, the twin sisters behind Benefit, met a local dancer who requested a long-lasting red pigment that wouldn’t budge during her shows. They listened, and this beloved rose lip and cheek stain was born. Year after year, it’s a bestseller for good reason: the translucent color leaves us with a natural flush so we look pretty, not made-up.
I was excited to sample this product, because it's so far outside of the realm of what I typically use in my own routine. After sampling it, I don't think I'll buy. The color wasn't right for me, and I found the product somewhat difficult to work with on my cheeks. However, it is a really interesting product and I can see where it would be an amazingly convenient alternative to a lot of different makeups. I might save my little sample for nights out when I really want to dress things up a bit more.3
Very natural looking on both cheeks and lips. It didn't last as long on my lips, even without eating or drinking anything, it was gone within a couple hours. The color and smell are really nice though.4
I never knew such a product existed! I have rather dry lips so will have to try again after some exfoliation, but it has a nice tint. I also love that you can add layers to control tint. Very cool product.4
I have been using this stain for about 7 years and love it. The color is perfect on my fair cool-toned skin. It's buildable, so you can do anything from a pale flush of color to a dramatic almost fuschia cheek.
I love the way it looks on lips too. It won't look like your are wearing lippie, just a barely-there wash of red. The only thing I don't like is the applicator. If you are wearing it on your lips, that means you are touching the brush to your lips and then dipping it back into the rest of the stain--bad news for breeding bacteria, and I don't like the idea of then rubbing my old saliva on to my face (hello breakouts!). In general I've used a cotton swab, or used separate bottles for lips vs. cheeks.
Did not give my lops as much color as I wanted, but it is still a nice product! I doubt I would buy it in the stores, but I do enjoy my little tester every now and then!3
Even though it looks really dark in the bottle, this product leaves a nice natural pink tint on the lips. It works best if lips are exfoliated and not too dry. Otherwise, it runs to inside of lip and looks like you've been eating a popsicle. It's a really thin liquid. I find it worked best if I pressed lips together after applying so that it absorbed quickly. It did have a funny bitter taste at first, but that went away after a bit. I liked it with a clear gloss over it best.
It's more difficult to apply to cheeks, I thought, but maybe I was applying it wrong. I think I used too much the first time. It also seems to work better when blended with a brush. Otherwise, it will absorb into your fingers and turn them red. I will keep practicing on the cheeks. I do like that it lasts a long time on cheeks and lips. I will probably purchase this product when I run out of my sample.
I don't normally like "stains" but this one went on nice and smooth. I was very impressed with the color. The sample was a little small and therefore a little difficult to apply.4
I like the stain on my lips with a little vaseline, looks natural and healthy. Reminds me of summer after eating a cherry popsicle. This is a great product for a casual Satruday, but not polished enough for the office.4
I really have never cared for this brand. I knew of this product, but was prepared not to like it. I was pleasantly surprised. I own other lip stains, but have always found the color to be a little strange. This had a nice believable color. I wouldn't mind sampling the other color they have as well, but will probably purchase this in the future.4
The color of this tint is very subtle both on my lips and on my cheeks. It smells good, but tastes bad if you accidentally get it in your mouth before it dries. You only need a tiny bit, which is nice, a little goes a very long way.3
