The lids are tight enough that soup won't spill in a car ride, which means they can be a bit difficult to remove. Steady, slightly increasing pressure is the key. I learned that the hard way. Don't worry, it washed out. The tapestry pattern is colorfully lovely without trying too hard. I've kept leftovers and snacks in these, and no one sees them but remarks on how nice they are. I have the same complaint about the weird film on the lid. I hand wash everything--no dishwasher in this old house. How on earth can all my other plastics be squeaky clean, but these lids have some weird, almost oily kind of cloudy film? I hope it'll wear off after a while.5
