Birchbox Breakdown

There’s no question we’ll be slipping this book in our suitcase this summer—and fervently hoping our trip to the beach goes more smoothly than the one in this funny, warm-hearted novel. The extended Post clan—long-married Franny and Jim, just-out-of-high-school daughter Sylvia, older son Bobby and his girlfriend, and Franny’s best friend Charles and his husband—are headed to Mallorca for two weeks of sun, sand, and celebration. They bring more baggage, as each of them worries about what’s next in their lives, than they declare at customs. And each person’s individual concerns are only compounded as secrets surface and slights old and new are suffered in this wryly observant, sympathetically told story of how families—and people—change without breaking apart.

How to Use

Straub’s third novel (she previously wrote Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures and Other People We Married) follows the Posts for their entire two week vacation—but its rich voice and resonant understanding of relationships will stay with us far longer.

Less than impressed

I was so excited when I found out birchbox was starting a book club! I love to read and I was expecting a fun, summer read. This was definitely a summer read. However, it didn't require any brainpower nor did it have any twist, turn or plot other than your basic, neat and tidy everyone has problems and everyone fixes them in 200 pages. Hopefully next month will have something a little better!

Left me annoyed

Listening to an 18 year old whine about *having* to go on a wonderful vacation while learning to despise her whole family, except for the girlfriend of the brother who the author wants you to dislike, but you end up liking her the most... is not my idea of a good time. Do yourself a favor and move along.

Easy Read
Purchased

Easy read and a little slow. Nice book to take on vacation. Doesn't require a whole lot of thinking but sometimes that's nice when you're just relaxing on the beach :)

Fun, easy read

The book was a fun easy read, good for taking a break between classes or for a relaxed weekend in. It would be cool if there was an e-book option, but this book was light and easy to carry in a small backpack or a medium sized purse.

LOVED the story - ready to book a trip to Mallorca!

This was the first book I've ever read by Ms. Struab, and I'll definitely read anything else she writes. She tells the story of the Post family beautifully, and like any family, they are multi-layered with their own problems and all seem to culminate while on vacation in Spain. I did not want this book to end - definitely the perfect book to tuck in any beach bag.
