Birchbox Breakdown

Gorgeous textiles aren’t the best (or only) thing to come out of Morocco. These days, everyone is abuzz about the country’s revered beauty treatments. This exotic shampoo, full of volcanic mud from the Atlas Mountains, purifies hair so thoroughly, you can skip your next shower without any dire consequences. Instead of the long list of artificial ingredients you’ll find in most shampoos, the minimal formula is designed to be nontoxic and gentle enough for children. Available in sweet Clementine and minty Menthe Vanilla.

How it Works

This eco-friendly shampoo is made with only a few ingredients: Moroccan mud, aloe vera juice, cleansing Kalahari mineral salts, and a light dose of fragrance from essential oils. It’s free of all synthetic perfumes and chemicals.

How to Use

Work a generous dose of the mud through your hair from root to tip. Wait two minutes, then rinse away completely. For best results, skip the heat styling and towel-dry to help your hair retain moisture. If you want, you can massage a few drops into your scalp and ends for added softness.

Clementine: Certified organic aloe vera juice, Moroccan mud, Kalahari mineral salts, clementine essential oil.

Menthe vanilla: Certified organic aloe vera juice, Moroccan mud, Kalahari mineral salts, natural vanilla, peppermint essential oil.

Heavy stuff

I've been reading everyone else's reviews and I know I shook the bottle enough, but my hair is very long and thick.. maybe it just wasn't the right product for me. It does not lather at all and was very hard to wash out. Even days after, I felt like there was clay in my hair. I actually broke my brush trying to comb it out each day. Not a good product for me.

Different, even a little strange, but it's growing on me

I ordered this in the Menthe Vanilla out of sheer curiosity. The first time I used it, I wasn't so sure I'd like it; it leaves a residue and made my hair feel a little gummy. Maybe a hippie whose idea of getting clean is rolling around in the mud and dousing on the patchouli oil would like this, but I'm no hippie... That said, I decided to give it another chance, and I'm glad I did. The mint is very aggressive; my scalp tingled for several minutes after I rinsed out the mud. What you should remember is that this isn't shampoo. Knowing this, the next time I used it, I paid special attention to the way my hair responded. Yes, this leaves a residue, but the coating does leave my hair shiny and incredibly manageable, even after using my straightening iron. And my hair and scalp still felt and looked clean the next day, and the next.

Disappointing
Purchased

I was really looking forward to this shampoo, but it made my hair feel dry and straw like. My hair hasn't had this bad a texture since I was swimming in chlorine every day! It smells nice, and might work well for other people, but it just didn't jive with my hair.

Interesting Product

I decided to try this product because it's supposed to be good for your hair and I love that it's organic. However, if you've never used anything like it before, be prepared to be a little weirded out.

You are supposed to shake the bottle a lot before you pump because it's very watery. It doesn't thicken too much and it looks and feels like muddy, gritty water in your hands. You are also supposed to coat your hair in this stuff, but my hair is very thick and this stuff doesn't lather at all (making it difficult to really coat your hair).

After I used it, my hair felt really heavy, like it had a lot of build up or product still in it. It was hard to brush through (imagine trying to comb through your hair right after coating it with lots of hairspray). It doesn't feel very nice wet, so I decided to blow dry it, despite Birchbox's recommendation not to.

My hair is definitely noticeably different. It looks softer and I used the vanilla mint mud-poo, which was nice and cool and tingly on my scalp. I think I may be a little displeased because I have very oily hair and scalp but I try to wash my hair every other day. I used the mud-poo on my "wash day" (I didn't wash my hair the day before), so it could just be there was a lot of build-up in my hair already.

I think in the future, I will still use this product and give it another chance. But I'll try to use it at night before bed so I don't have to blow dry my hair and I will make sure to use it the day after I wash my hair with regular shampoo instead of 2 days later.

I tried this because I heard Moroccan oil was good for the hair. Well it paid off great and smooth texture. Great for dry hair
