Men's Natural Hair Tutorial: How to Get Textured Curls

How to Get Textured Curls in Natural Hair

An updated take on the Twist that was so popular in the early 2000s, this look gives hair some depth and texture. Typically, those with 3A to 4C textures benefit the most from using a hair sponge, explains hair artist, Jazmin Kelly. However, hair must have some grit to create friction with a hair sponge in order to create texture.

If youre growing your hair out (and dont want to commit to locs or an Afro) the sponge method is a great alternative. Here are a few steps to keep in mind:

Step 1: Wash Hair

Start with slightly wet, moisturized hair thats at least an inch long.

Condition, condition, condition! explains Kelly. Saturating the hair with water and using a good slathering of conditioner mixed with almond oil will tremendously ease the trouble of tangles resulting in little to no hair loss.

Step 3: Grab Your Sponge

Using a curl sponge, start at the crown of the head and rub it in a circular motion clockwise around the head for 1-5 minutes.

Step 4: Keep Hair Healthy

Remember to keep your hair and scalp moisturized, and shampoo your hair once a weekwait too long and those curls turn into serious tangles (err, like locs)
Its important for curly hair to be hydrated. Using a steamer in conjunction with a hydrating conditioner will keep hair hydrated, revitalize color and overall improve elasticity of hair, adds Kelly.
