I left with a braided, bohemian-inspired look that's both effortlessly elegant *and* easy enough to do on my own (really!). Keep reading below to recreate it at home: 

** Start with a #8 clipper setting low around the ears and neck. **Try: Panasonic Precision Hair and Beard Trimmer
** Use clippers to remove any added bulk on the sides, and to blend the sides into the top.

** Trim the top to your desired length (your hair's actual length when pulled taut will vary based on curl). 

** The barber or stylist should work in lots of texture here using point cutting techniquesthis will largely be achieved by removing bulk from the hair around the crown.

An updated take on the Twist that was so popular in the early 2000s, this look gives hair some depth and texture. Typically, those with 3A to 4C  textures benefit the most from using a hair sponge, explains hair artist, Jazmin Kelly. However, hair must have some grit to create friction with a hair sponge in order to create texture.

If youre growing your hair out  (and dont want to commit to locs or an Afro) the sponge method is a great alternative. Here are a few steps to keep in mind:

Start with slightly wet, moisturized hair thats at least an inch long.

Those of us with naturally wavy, curly, or coily texture know that our hair is full of surprises: One day, it will fall into perfect, glossy spirals; the next, it will look like a frizzy mess. But its possible to improve the odds of a good hair day by pinpointing the tricksand the holy grail productsthat are most likely to bring out your best curls. To help, we researched four tried-and-tested hacks designed to help you define and de-frizz your ringlets, spirals, curls, and corkscrews.


We love embracing our natural curls, but there are certain instances (ahem, humid days) that make us want to curse the beauty gods for unwanted frizz and a total lack of definition. Those days are soon to be a thing of the past thanks to "hair plopping", a technique that allows curls to retain their shape as they air dry. Here's a play-by-play on how to achieve the technique at home.

1. After detangling, apply a curl defining product (we like Bumble and bumble. Curl Defining Creme) to damp curls.
2. Next, lay a cotton t-shirt or non-terry cloth towel like the DevaCurl DevaTowel Anti-Frizz Microfiber Towel) on a flat surface.
3. Flip your head over and slowly lower your curls onto the t-shirt or towel, so that they gently pile on top of each other (ps. this is "the plop"!)
4. If using a t-shirt, take the bottom and secure it over the nape of your neck, followed by the top of your t-shirt. Tie any remaining fabric (like the sleeves) toward the front of your head. Same goes for the towel  wrap it up like you normally would, keeping your "plop" style intact.
5. Then simply let your curls air dry for 20 minutes to two hours, or sleep on them overnight.

Unlike drying with terry cloth towels, which disturb the hair cuticle (and lead to major frizz!), gently folding hair onto a t-shirt allows curls to air dry intact without losing moisture. The result? Controlled, totally heat-free defined coils that won't unravel as soon as the thermostat hits 80.  We like the sound of that.

"Im a born planner whos happiest when making a list. So when the time came for me to revamp my hair regimen while growing it out, I came up with a bunch of boxes to check off over the coming months.

The first thing on my to-do list was shortening my once-a-week, four-hour-long Saturday washing routine. Cutting the process would go a long way toward making me fall in love with my natural texture. I usually detangle and twist my hair using conditioner before I shampoo. Then I sit with the conditioner on for about an hour before carefully lathering up just my scalp. One snowy Friday night a few weeks later, I decided to sleep in a hair mask made out of coffee grounds and castor oil thats supposed to speed up the growth process. To wash it out the next morning, I used a clarifying shampoo without pre-detangling. Wash Day Doesn't Have to Be Stressful Anymore

We can all agree on one thing in the Birchbox offices: We love waves. Our curling irons and styling wands at our desks are proof. But there was much debate as to how we define different types of waveswhat does a beachy one look like versus boho? After all the back and forth (is there even a difference?!) we decided to take a not-so-scientific office poll to settle what each wave really looks like, finally agreeing on five easy-to-achieve styles. Check a few of our favorite blogger tutorials to master each of the waves once and for all.

Definition: The red carpet favorite of the bunch, these loose, glossy waves are usually worn with a deep side part, a behind-the-ear tuck, and five-figure designer gowns.

Method: Start by creating a deep side part with the end of a rattail comb (go as dramatic as youd like here!) If your hair is on the drier side, add a dime-sized amount of treatment oil or serum, NatureLab Tokyo Perfect Smooth Hair Oil for extra hydration. Ive always had problem hair. Some of my earliest memories involve running around the house with pantyhose on my head, trying to emulate Barbie and Blair from The Facts of Life. Their shiny, thick hair flowed over their shoulders like a waterfall. Family members usually told me mine was too tough, too coarse, too short, too everything.

In high school, I got my first relaxer. Despite the fact that my hair obviously didnt react well to the chemicals and was so prone to breakage, I found my new straight texture easier to manage. For more than a decade, I continued visiting the salon every four to six weeks for what black women affectionately call creamy crack. Then one day when I was in my mid-twenties, a bad reaction to relaxer caused a golf ballsized patch of hair near my crown to fall out. My dermatologist advised me to lay off relaxers once and for alland I embarked upon what has become a long journey toward scalp recovery.

Over the next few years, I relied on braided extensions, weaves and wigs to allow my hair to grow out while I intermittently chopped off the chemically straightened portion inch by inch. Once fully back to my natural texture, I became an amateur trichologist, researching ingredients that would repair my hair, trying to make amends for all the pain Id put it through. I tried anything that said keratin or biotin on the bottle and grew dependent on shea butter and coconut and olive oils, despite not really loving how greasy and heavy they made my hair feel.

The good news: I now pay a ton of attention to the ingredients in hair products. I honestly cant believe that I ever let a stylist put on gloves to protect her own skin, then slather a foreign substance onto my head. The bad news: Ive been so focused on scalp health that Ive completely neglected style. I dont know what to do with my hair (or even how to do it for that matter). Thankful for surviving the devastation of hair loss, Ive just been happy to let my limp, lifeless hair do nothing special.

But thats changed over the past year. I work with a bunch of natural-haired ladies with pretty, springy, spirally curls. And the naturalistas of Pinterest and Instagram give me massive hair envy as they post pictures of puff after stunning puff. 
But, Ive finally made peace with whats growing out of my own head. My coarse texture used to make me feel ashamed. These days I see it as my best featureits what makes me me, a unique part of my cultural identity that isnt any less than anyone elses.
